Our History

The story of Edwin Allen High School begins in 1964 when Frankfield High School (Comprehensive) opened its doors to 356 eager students in Frankfield, Clarendon. With just 30 dedicated teachers and a single classroom block, this modest beginning would prove to be the foundation of what would become one of Jamaica's most celebrated educational institutions. The school was established during a pivotal time in Jamaica's educational development, embodying the nation's commitment to expanding access to quality secondary education. The institution's evolution reflects the broader transformation of Jamaica's educational landscape. In 1984, the school was renamed Edwin Allen Comprehensive High School, honoring Edwin Allen, a visionary former Minister of Education whose philosophy emphasized providing opportunities for broad and inclusive secondary education. This name change marked not just an administrative shift, but a deeper commitment to Allen's educational ideals of excellence and accessibility. The dawn of the new millennium brought another significant milestone when, in 2000, the school became Edwin Allen High School following national restructuring of comprehensive schools. This transition coincided with remarkable growth, as the campus expanded from its original single building to a modern, multi-block facility featuring advanced science laboratories, computer centers, smart classrooms, and innovative solar-powered administrative buildings. While academic excellence remained at the heart of the school's mission, Edwin Allen High School began to gain international recognition for its extraordinary athletics program, particularly in track and field. The school's dominance at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships became legendary, with multiple Girls' Championships titles and athletes regularly competing at prestigious international events like the Penn Relays. This athletic prowess, combined with consistent academic achievement at CSEC and CAPE levels, established Edwin Allen as a truly exceptional institution. Today, serving over two thousand students, Edwin Allen High School stands as a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and continuous growth. For six decades, the institution has remained true to its motto 'Transeamus in Exemplum' - we shall be an example - producing graduates who excel across diverse fields from education and business to science, technology, and public service, carrying forward the school's legacy of excellence into the global community.
